Entries in Village Underground (1)

Tuesday May 4th might quite possibly have been one of the greatest nights of my life.  Here's what happened:

12:15am: I'm sitting in front of my computer in my pyjamas, entering my students' grades.
12:20am: A chat window pops up and one of my friends tells me to get my a** to the city because PRINCE (as in THE Prince, Mr. Purple Rain etc. etc.) has allegedly asked a musician friend of ours, to do a jam session with him at the Village Underground.
12:25am: I tell my roommate Hadyn that "supposedly Prince is jamming with our boys tonight at the Underground," and then I continue doing my work.
12:30am:  I realize I'm crazy and the reason I live in New York F***ing City is for moments like this.  I tell my roommate I'll be dressed in five minutes and run into my room to get changed.
12:38am:  I call a cab.
12:45am:  The cab arrives and I ask the driver to get us to the city "as fast as humanly possible."
12:50am:  Our cabbie is going 80mph in a 40mph zone.  I tell him he's my favorite person on the planet.
12:59am:  My roommate and I are walking into the venue, completely dumbfounded that we arrived in only fifteen minutes (it's normally about a twenty-five to thirty minute drive).
1:10am:  The MAN himself jumps on stage and is jamming on his guitar with his phenomenal back-up singers and the rest of his band.
1:11am:  I manage to keep from passing out and start to cry instead.
1:30am:  Prince gets down, lets his band and back-up singers finish the set and is now seated at a table less than ten feet away from me!!!
2:00am:  The band wraps up the rest of the set and I'm pinching myself to see if I was dreaming.
3:00am:  I'm leaving the club, unable to wipe the ear to ear grin off of my face, singing "I Feel for You" at the top of my lungs.

This is why I LOVE New York City people.  Only in New York.

Check out the videos below.  They are incredibly shaky and Prince's back is either turned or his head is low as he did not want to be photographed or recorded however, the sound is crystal clear and you can hear the musical genius that is, PRINCE.  Enjoy.

Oh what a night.
